(UNDER THE GREEN WOOD TREE) WRITER:WILLAM SHAKESPEARE This is a charming lyrical song extracted form a well known shakespearean comedy "As you like it". Lord Amiens, a courtier of a banished duke propero, sings this song in the Forest of Arden. The step-brother of the duke, named Fredrick made conspiracy to murder his elder brother and usurp his state Milan.
In this story Throught Lord Amiens, Shakespeare presents a contrast between city or court life and the life in the forest . He greatly praises the forest life because in his opinion , it is simple , happy , comfortable , peaceful and pleasant lifewhere as the city life is full of intrgues and enmity . He also invites those people to join him in the forest , who are fed up of the intrigues of city life and want to sing happy songs with the birds .
The poet further lays certain conditions for such a pleasant life i.e.. only that person can lead a happy life in the forest , who avoids all the worldly aspirations . He love to live under the scorching heat of the sun . He seeks his livelihood with the sweat of his brow and remains satisfied with whatever food, he gets. He also must have tje courage to face the troubles of the winter season and rough weather .
